What is the Easiest Way to Tow a Car?

The logistics and legality of how to tow a car in NSW can be overwhelming. If you need to have your car towed, you must consider the reason for towing, rules and regulations, and cost. We’ve outlined these areas for you so that you can make the best decision when it comes to towing your car.

Reasons for towing a car

Cars may require towing for different reasons, our most common include the following:

Breakdowns & accidents

These incidents are beyond our control and can be very stressful situations. Accident and breakdown towing will require the car to be towed safely off the road or to a required place for repairs or collection.

Prestige vehicle & race car transportation

Other than breakdowns and accidents, cars may need to be towed for transportation purposes. Whether it’s transporting a prestige vehicle to a new destination, or transporting a race car to the race track, transportation of these vehicles need to be handled with a lot of care and efficiency, taking into account the risk of damage, stone chips and weather.

Who can tow a car?

It’s important to know that not all drivers are eligible to tow a vehicle and there are rules that must be followed at all times. In NSW, full licence drivers are able to tow trailers or caravans, as long as all rules are followed. Learner and provisional P1 and provisional motorcycles are not allowed to tow. P1 car licence holders are limited to towing small trailers (up to 250kg unloaded weight).

The number of people who can tow cars is even more limited and certificates and licences are required. Professionals (like us!) who have obtained a tow truck driver certificate or operator licence are the only people who are allowed to conduct a business involving the operation of any tow truck for the purposes of towing motor vehicles, especially for the accident towing. Also, in order to use an A-frame for towing a car, the driver must obtain an engineering certificate from a Transport for NSW recognised engineering signatory, which will only be granted if certain conditions are met.

The easiest way to tow a car

If you’ve found yourself in a situation where you need your car towed, the easiest and most safest option is to hire a trusted professional to do the job for you. A towing company can move and transport your car to your required location using their professional trucks. Professional tow companies are also licensed and trained, providing you reassurance that your car is in good hands.

Backloading – an efficient & cost-effective option

If you want to save money on car towing, we offer a backloading service that can save you up to 50% of the normal towing prices! We often have trucks returning from country and regional NSW trips empty, so we list these dates on our website and offer them up for backloading. If there’s a truck heading on a route that will suit you, contact us as soon as possible so that we can organise the load.
